5 Tips for Buying Dog Strollers & Joggers

| Published by |

Kyjen Dog StrollerThe idea of using dog strollers has become incredibly popular over the past few years. More and more people are now heading outside with their animals in tow, and a dog stroller is one of the best ways to do it. Doggie strollers let pet owners walk, jog, run or just stroll while dogs enjoy their ride in the outdoors. They prevent small dogs from getting too tuckered out on their walk and they keep dogs safe on busy streets and crowded sidewalks.

Of course, the popularity of these products has meant buying a stroller for dogs is incredibly difficult as there is a massive selection to choose from. There are a wide array of features, styles and prices available. You want to choose one that fits your needs and that you will love to use.

These 5 tips will guide you in the right direction for choosing the best dog stroller for you and your dog. Also check out our Stroller Comparison Guide for side-by-side stroller comparisons and features.

Tips for Choosing Best Dog Strollers

Tip One: Know Your Dog’s Size

First things first: Before buying a dog stroller, you really need to think about the size of your pet. If you have a puppy, estimate the size that they will be when full grown unless you want to purchase another carriage in the future. There are a number of different sizes of strollers for dogs on the market that have a weight capacity ranging from 10 pounds to 165 pounds. You want to purchase one that will hold your dog’s weight, but more importantly allows your dog to be comfortable.

Think about how your dog will be most comfortable on the ride- standing up, sitting, lying down- and then measure the space needed for that position. This can easily be done by measuring your dog in that position when on the floor or in their bed. Do not opt to get a stroller that will be too small – your dog WILL get uncomfortable and feel squished. If you have a senior dog, you definitely want to base your buying decision on comfort. This is especially true if your senior dog has painful joint and hip issues, arthritis, or other conditions that lend them to not be able to walk very far.

Tip Two: Know Your Intended Use

Ask yourself how you will be using the dog stroller. Walking, jogging, running, errands to the store? If your answer consists of daily walks around town and trips to the store, a regular doggy stroller will be perfect. These dog strollers usually have small tires with 2 wheel sets in the front and back. They are easy to push on paved areas and are great for crowded areas.

If your answer consists of jogging or running with your dog, you will want to look for a jogging stroller. Large dogs usually can run beside a runner on a leash. However, most small dogs and many senior dogs cannot run at a pace of the jogger and tire out fast. Dog jogging strollers were designed for active pet lovers. They usually have 3 large tires (1 in the front and 2 in the rear), rear shocks, and other features that ensure a smooth ride for dogs while being easy to push over all terrains.

If your answer consists of running errands or traveling from place to place where you will be using the dog buggy, it may be a good idea to check out an all-in-one stroller that converts into a carrier and a car seat. If you decide not to go with that model, just ensure that the buggy folds for transporting and for storage.

Lastly, if you love to go biking, there are even strollers for dogs that double as a bike trailer that can be pulled behind your bicycle.

Tip Three: Know The Terrain Where You will be Using the Dog Strollers

Jogging Dog StrollersThis tip goes along with tip #2, as it will depend on your intended use. You need to know where the majority of your outdoor strolls will take place. Will you be on the side walk, in the grass at the park, on gravel, or on a trail? If most of your strolls will be on smooth store surfaces, sidewalks and roads, and/or on the paved path in your local park, a doggie stroller with small wheels and no suspension will be fine.

If you will be going to a grassy park with no paths or venturing off-road with rough terrains, you will want to opt for a few important upgraded features that are most common in the dog jogging strollers, even if you will not be jogging. Look for strollers for dogs that have large tires (air or EVA) and a suspension or shock absorbers so that your dog has a nice, smooth ride despite the terrain. This will also keep your hands from bearing the bouncing and vibrations from the roughness. In addition, ensure that the frame is constructed for ruggedness and durability, but is lightweight so that it is not too heavy to push around. A nice feature for maneuverability is to have the option to either lock the front wheel or allow it to swivel/turn 360 degrees for easier steering. Lastly, a good handle grip will make it more comfortable for you to push.

Tip Four: Understand Safety Features

Safety in the doggy stroller is going to be a priority. You want to ensure that your dog will be safely secure inside the stroller, especially if you have an active dog that dashes around and will jump out if they see another person or something to chase. Most doggie strollers come with a safety belt or tether that connects to the dog’s harness or collar.

A very useful safety feature is a parking brake. When you stop to take a break or are at a place to let your dog out of the stroller, a parking brake keeps the dog buggy in place. The last thing you want is to see your dog rolling away because there is no brake.

Tip Five: Choose a Good Stroller That Meets Your Needs

Decent dog strollers for sale can be affordable, but some would say they cost quite a bit, especially the jogging styles. From experience, it is worth making the investment. We do not recommend that you buy cheap dog strollers that really do not meet your needs just because they are an inexpensive option. Most of the time, those that choose that option end up spending more in the long run by buying multiple strollers and ending up with the one they really wanted from the start.

Buy the one that will work the best and be the most comfortable for your dog from the start!

I am planning to get a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy this Spring, and would like to take him running with me. I run in the city with often poor sidewalks, many of my runs are longer than an hour. Which jogging stroller would you recommend? I can’t believe I’m considering this!

Great website — I’m looking for a stroller for my 20 lb. Terrier/mix who has a bad rear leg. She does very well in the back yard but can no longer take walks on pavement. I don’t want her to lose interest in her life so I thought maybe a stroller would do the trick. I also share my home with a 40 lb. Border Collie/mix as well and she needs her walks too.
