Are you looking to vacation with your dog at the beach this summer? Thanks to the Wildwood City Commission, there will be more options for dog friendly beaches in NJ this summer.
New Dog Friendly Beaches in NJ
The past several years, New Jersey beaches have allowed dogs to be on the beaches during off-peak seasons, but never during peak times. The rules for Fido limited them to winter months, off hours, and required them to be on a leash. Finally, officials in Wildwood, NJ have approved a plan to set up a dog friendly beach year-round and unleashed!
Come mid-June, there will be dog friendly beaches in NJ during peak season at the Wildwood Beaches. Dogs will be allowed to play on the beach at Poplar Avenue between the boardwalk and the water’s edge, a 190 yard area of beach. There will be no requirement for a beach tag for dogs to play. In addition, there will be watering stations and waste bags for pet owners to keep the area clean.
“Ninety-nine percent of the feedback we’ve gotten from the community, as well as the business community, has been, ‘Wow, this is a great idea,'” said Wildwood commissioner Pete Byron. Owners of dog friendly hotels are looking forward to the change. “I think it’s going to be a good thing that the city is opening a dog beach,” said Bob Ferguson from one of the most popular dog friendly hotels, the Rus Mar Motel on Ocean Avenue. Bob estimates that over 70% of his guests are traveling with their dogs.
