Choosing the best dog coats can be daunting with the options available. You should pick a coat that will be comfortable for your dog, that will allow them to run and play without restricting their movement, and will last for more than one season.

To help in your buying decision, we put together this list of the top dog coats. Any of the coats listed will be a perfect solution to keep your dog warm during those cold winter days.

Best Dog Coats for Winter

The best winter dog coats include the Great White North Dog Coat by Chilly Dogs, the Extreme Warmer by Hurtta, and the Summit Parka by Hurtta. All of these dog coats are excellent choices for cold weather. Each winter dog coat has its own unique features highlighted in our list of the best dog jackets.

1. Extreme Warmer Dog Coat

The Extreme Warmer is a favorite due to the complete coverage and unique thermo-conductive liner. It is one of the warmest dog coats available. There is no other coat like this on the market! This dog coat provides the maximum warmth and protection from winter’s harshest weather. The Extreme Warmer has more protection and can literally provide a sleeping bag like wrap around your dog for ultimate warmth.

This dog winter jacket features soft and flexible material. The thermo-conductive liner absorbs and retains your dog’s own body heat – keeping your dog warmer longer than most other dog coats. The Extreme Warmer has a long neck and extended ‘hood’ that protects a dog all the way up to the ears if necessary. Slots on the back allow a collar or harness to be used. Lastly, the coat has rear flaps that stay shut with a button to give coverage over the rear and to prevent drafts coming in through the back. And yes, your dog is able to do their business with with the coat on by placing the flaps over the tail.

The Extreme Warmer dog coat is waterproof, windproof, and breathable. The jacket is available in 9 sizes and 2 colors- granite and blaze orange. (Brand new for 2017 – 2018 season). Truly, an exceptional dog coat!

2. Chilly Dogs Great White North Dog Coats

Another favorite winter jacket that stands out among the competition for the best winter coat for dogs is the Great White North Winter Dog Jacket by Chilly Dogs. The Great White North Winter Dog Coats feature 12-ounce Canadian made, non-pilling fleece with a polyurethane coated outer-shell. The coats are waterproof, windproof, and breathable. The Great White North coats stand up to the Extreme Warmer for quality and warmth.

Chilly Dogs has designed these dog winter coats to keep your canine warm even at subzero temperatures. In fact, the manufacturer claims that this coat will keep your dog warm down to -20F. The coats have an improved design with the addition of Velcro to the body for a better fit for active dogs.

When used in combination with the Head Muff Winter Dog Hat, there is complete protection for Fido. Chilly Dogs also carries an uniquely designed winter coat specifically for Italian Greyhounds. The Great White North dog coats are available in many sizes for a good fit on all breeds, including long and lean breeds. The fleece part of the coat is available in Black, Red, Blaze Orange, Blue, and Pink.

The Summit Parka replaced the all-time best selling Hurtta Winter Dog Coat! The Summit Parka is very efficient at keeping a dog warm with the new high collar while providing maximum freedom of movement, as the coat does not go over the dog’s legs. The dog jacket is made with Houndtex® material, making it waterproof, windproof, and breathable.

The coat is extremely easy to get on and off. It also is the most flexible in sizing– allowing it to fit all breeds and sizes, with or without a deep chest. This is due to the new adjustable drawstring features in the collar and back area. The winter jacket is available in an incredible 13 sizes and 3 colors- raven (black), cherry and blaze orange. This is bound to be a popular choice for this winter season.

1. Chilly Sweater

The Chilly Sweater is a perfect fido fleece for cool fall and chilly spring days. The fleece sweater is versatile as it makes a great spring/fall coat, travel sweater, and can even be worn indoors on cold winter nights as sleepwear for dogs. We love it for camping as it is just the perfect thickness!

Answers to Common Questions

What makes these the top winter dog coats?

Both the Hurtta and the Chilly Dogs fleece coats are voted as the best dog coats. Why? These dog winter coats provide excellent protection against the toughest winter elements and stand out for their athletic designs for active dogs. Both companies design their winter dog coats with the same high standards that we expect from our own outdoor and athletic apparel. The coats have superior quality, great fits for all dog breeds, and provide a full range of motion for active dogs.

Both companies have been compared to the dog counterpart of North Face, which, as we all have come to know, is the place for innovative clothing and active wear designed for athletes and outdoor adventurers. Both make some of the best outdoor performance wear for dogs.

Which one is the warmest dog coat?

This is one of the most common questions that we get. The most important aspect to any coat is to ensure that the coat fits snugly in the chest and is a perfect fit, as this will keep your dog warm. All 3 jackets are great performing coats with excellent customer reviews.

So to answer the question, it really is up to personal preference as to the specific features, colors, and fit for your dog. The Hurtta coats are designed more like human ski jackets so are very lightweight. The Extreme Warmer design has rear flaps. The Great White North is a thick fleece and is very tough if dogs will be playing rough or running through brush. Otherwise, they are all comparable.

Which coat is best for hiking, hunting, or running through the woods?

We recommend the Great White North for dogs that are going to be running through the woods. While no coat is guaranteed to withstand thick briers, the Great White North coat does seem to last even with the wear and tear of running through the woods. The Hurtta Extreme Warmer and Summit Parka hold up very well for hiking. However, the material may get snagged if caught on a brier or in thick brush. All coats are available in blaze orange for visibility.

How do I measure my dog? How do I get a perfect fit?

The above mentioned winter dog coats are available in many sizes to ensure that they fit properly. It is very important that you measure your dog correctly when ordering. The chest measurement is the most important! Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Have your dog stand straight with head up. Do NOT measure when your dog is sitting or lying down, as it will throw off the measurements.
  2. Use a tailor’s tape (soft tape measure) or thin rope that then can be aligned to a ruler.
  3. Measure your dog’s back length from the withers (highest ridge between the shoulder blades) to the base of the tail. Do NOT measure from your dog’s collar.
  4. Measure the chest circumference/girth at the widest part of the chest.
  5. Measure the neck circumference at the base of the neck.
  6. Match your dog’s measurements to the sizing charts for each specific coat.

Which winter jacket is best for very small dogs?

For very small dogs, we have found that the Great White North coat has a better fit due to the available sizes offered for tiny pups. The Summit Parka may also be a good choice due to the many adjustments. However, the Summit Parka often ends up being too short in the back length in order to get a good fit around the chest.

What is the Houndtex® Fabric used in the Hurtta Dog Coats?

Hurtta’s unique line of dog winter jackets demonstrates the company’s ability to design high quality, technical dog apparel for all outdoor activities and weather climates. All of the Hurtta dog coats feature the exceptional Houndtex® fabric, a signature material that has been researched and developed exclusively by this Company.

The Houndtex® material is waterproof and windproof while maintaining breathability. The fabric is designed specifically for performance and comfort. The Houndtex® outdoor fabrics match those of high-quality outdoor outfits designed for people. The fabrics are used in the dog winter coats, making them softer, smoother, and quieter, while providing great comfort for long outdoor wear.

How do I wash the coats?

All of the dog coats mentioned are machine washable. It is recommended to wash a dog coat inside out using mild, allergy-free detergent on a low spin cycle. Next, it is recommended to avoid using bleach or fabric softener, as it can impair the qualities of the Hountex® and Fleece materials, limiting the effectiveness of the waterproofing. Lastly, it is recommended that you line dry or use a very delicate setting in the dryer to dry the coat.

I have 2 hairless rat terrier, looking for clothing that has leg coverings also.any suggestion

  • Judy says:

Looking for a cold weather coat for my Maltese. Currently have a Hurta winter coat fleece lined . It mats her hair terribly . Would you have a cold weather product available that wouldn’t mat her hair?
    Love your products!

    • Kristy says:

      Hi Judy,
Yes, the new Hurtta Summit Parka should not mat your Maltese’s hair as it has a different liner. However, depending on her measurements, the Summit Parka may be too short in the back if you order the correct size to fit around the chest. For dogs this small, we recommend the Great White North, as they have sizes that fit this breed perfectly. The Great White North is fleece lined, but I have never heard any issues with it matting hair.

  • Daniel Stoner says:

Sorry, but these are all terrible, because none of them come in blaze orange for high vis during hunting season. Major fail.

    • Kristy says:

Hi Daniel, Great News! The Hurtta Summit Parka is now available in Blaze Orange. In addition, the Great White North is available in Blaze Orange, but only the fleece part around the neck/shoulders is blaze orange while the rest is black.
There are also dog vests available in complete blaze orange.

Great products, When it comes to Shoes what do you recommend?

    • Kristy says:

      Hi Prem,
Muttluks offers great dog shoes – they have an all weather boot that can be used for summer heat to winters and they offer a fleece-lined boot that is nice and warm for winter. Hurtta just came out with the Outback Boots that are new for 2015 – 2016. I personally am getting a pair to try, but have not tested them out yet. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
